VW Tiguan sunroof care
On the Mk2 Tiguan a blocked panoramic drain overflows down the A-pillars into the footwell and onto the screen. Just as often, though, the water is really the cowl drain at the base of the windshield, so confirm the source first.
Clogged drains
Four tubes, two down the A-pillars and two at the rear, and they collect debris ("spider traps") that blocks the flow. The lower front-tube end sits at the bottom of the A-pillar and exits into the plenum chamber. Clear it from the top with a soft brush and confirm with a water flush: that is the method Volkswagen's own procedure uses, and it reaches the whole run. Reaching the lower end instead means getting in behind the wheel-arch liner or the plenum cover, and squeezing an aged hose there risks pushing it off its fitting, which is the one thing VW warns technicians about.
The drain tubes are a slip fit and will pop off inside the pillar under air pressure. Soft brush and water only.
What Volkswagen has documented
The Tiguan is unusual among the cars in this guide: Volkswagen has published a service action, a technical bulletin and a warranty extension that all touch sunroof water, so there is more hard ground here than owner threads alone would give you.
Service Action 60E5: the front drains and the red flaps
Service Action 60E5 covers 2018-2019 Tiguans (and 2015-2019 Golf SportWagen, 2017-2019 Golf Alltrack). Volkswagen's position is that moist debris collects at the front panoramic roof drains. The dealer procedure cleans both front drains and discards the red flap at the drain outlet, leaving the tab on the drain itself.
Two details from that procedure are useful to an owner. VW notes the cleaning tool "will exit the sunroof drain tube in the plenum chamber after approximately 120 cm", which tells you how long that front run actually is. And it warns technicians, in its own words, to "DO NOT use extra force if resistance is encountered ... Doing so could result in damaging the sunroof drain or disengaging the sunroof drain from the sunroof." That is the manufacturer making the same point we make: force is what turns a clog into a leak inside the car.
A wet headliner may not be the drains at all
Technical Bulletin 60-19-04 applies to the 2018-2022 Tiguan LWB. Where the front headliner is wet around the vanity lights, the sunroof or the overhead console, it puts the cause at the sunroof body-side seal rather than a blocked drain. If your wet patch is up at the front of the headliner rather than down in a footwell, this is worth raising with a dealer before anyone starts cleaning drains.
Volkswagen's Sunroof Limited Warranty Extension VWP-23-06, dated 22 August 2023, extends the New Vehicle Limited Warranty on a prorated basis to 7 years or 80,000 miles from the original in-service date, for model year 2018-2021 Tiguan among other models. It covers diagnosis and repair of "leakage and water ingress into the vehicle's interior from the Sunroof while in the fully closed position", and it also covers resulting damage to seats, carpets and floor mats, the interior ceiling, and failed electrical components.
⚠️ One condition worth knowing: for vehicles eligible for Service Action 60E2 or 60E5, that action must have been completed before the leak occurred for the extension to apply. If you own an affected Tiguan and have never had 60E5 done, that is worth sorting out now rather than after a wet carpet.
When it is not the sunroof
- Cowl / plenum drain. A frequent Tiguan footwell leak in owner reports. Leaves block the plenum drains at the base of the windshield and water overflows into the cabin intake. Dedicated owner threads are literally titled "water in footwell, not from panoramic."
- A/C condensate drain. Wet floor with A/C use, not rain.
(The verified VW panoramic-roof bulletins, for a cracked water channel and a pinched rear drain, are for the Golf and Golf Sportwagen, not the Tiguan.)
