What the 32241228 wiring adapter does

Some SPA-platform Volvos can overcool the AC evaporator. Repeated overcooling stresses the evaporator core until it cracks, the refrigerant escapes, and the AC stops cooling. Volvo documented the fault in a 2019 Technical Journal and issued a fix: an in-line jumper harness, part number 32241228, that adds a 1K ohm (1000 ohm) resistor to the circuit so the core no longer reaches the failure mode.

This adapter replicates the OEM 32241228 harness and installs the same way, following Volvo's method document VCC-517278-1. Installing it is preventive: it protects the evaporator before any damage occurs.

Improvements over the OEM 32241228 cable

  • Each cable is tested for 1K ohm resistance
  • Protective sleeve protects wires from damage during installation and use
  • Protective sleeve improves pull strength and prevents the connector from opening

32241228 fitment (Volvo's affected-vehicle list)

  • 2016-2020 Volvo XC90
  • 2017-2020 Volvo V90 and V90 Cross Country
  • 2017-2020 Volvo S90 and S90L
  • 2019-2020 Volvo S60
  • 2019-2020 Volvo V60 and V60 Cross Country

Volvo's 2021 follow-up bulletin also instructs installing 32241228 whenever an SPA evaporator is replaced, so if your car just had a new evaporator fitted, this adapter protects the new core from day one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Volvo needs this?

Check the fitment list above, which comes from the affected-vehicles table in Volvo's bulletin. If your model and year are listed, the adapter applies. There is no need to wait for symptoms: the point of the harness is to prevent the failure.

What are the symptoms of a cracked evaporator?

The AC gradually loses cooling performance or stops cooling entirely, and the system runs low on refrigerant with no visible leak, because the evaporator sits inside the dash. Replacing an evaporator is a major dash-out repair, which is why Volvo issued a preventive fix.

Is this the same as the Volvo part?

It performs the same function as OEM part 32241228: the same 1K ohm resistance, verified by testing on every cable. The added protective sleeve is an improvement over the bare OEM harness.
