Sunroof Gap Filler Kit for Older-Generation Volvos

Older-generation Volvos with a sunroof share a common, costly flaw. The rubber seal that wraps around the sunroof glass shrinks as it ages and pulls apart at the junction where its two ends meet, leaving a gap. Water and debris pass through that gap into the drain channels and can clog the drain tubes. Left unaddressed, a clogged sunroof drain lets water seep into the floor of the car, where much of the electronics live, and can cause thousands of dollars in damage.

A Permanent Solution

Replacing the factory seal does not solve the underlying problem. The genuine Volvo sunroof seal for these older models (OEM part 31218248) now costs around $400 CAD, and because the replacement is made from the same material, it will shrink again over time. That makes it a recurring expense rather than a permanent fix.

This kit costs a fraction of a single replacement seal and removes the need for repeated replacements. As the seal continues to shrink, larger inserts can be installed to maintain protection, so it adapts to ongoing seal degradation instead of starting the cycle over.

How to measure your gap. The seal wraps around the sunroof glass and shrinks at the junction where its two ends meet. Open the sunroof, find that junction, and measure the gap between the two seal faces. Gaps up to 20mm are covered by the Standard Kit; gaps from 20mm to 35mm need the Large Kit. When in doubt, size up. A slightly longer insert seats better.

Installation

On older vehicles the sunroof seal is brittle, so handle it carefully to avoid tearing. The seal usually will not slide along the track, so you will need to pull it back at the junction to make room for the filler. Always pull from behind the seal, never from its visible sealing face.

Removing the fragile older-Volvo sunroof seal

Choose the right size gap filler. Slightly longer is better.
At the shrunken junction, insert a metal hook or a flathead screwdriver into the channel behind the seal and gently pull the seal back. Work slowly, and never pull on the visible sealing face, since the brittle rubber tears easily. A little silicone lubricant can help.
With the seal held back, set the gap filler onto the glass at the junction.
Release the seal and press it back over the gap filler until it sits flush.

If the seal tears: cut it cleanly just past the end of the tear, then install a larger filler to bridge the slightly wider gap. The insert holds the seal faces apart and keeps the drain channel protected.
